01Nowadays the firmly fixed phrase “the incurable cancer” is belated view of situation. But it is enduring in Ukraine, because our society is not informed enough. The mass media doesn’t want to talk about such painful issue as cancer.
We forget that we need to distinguish between full recovery and remission (a temporary loss or abatement of the clinical signs of a disease). For the majority of cancer, if a person lives 5 years after treatment without relapses, it is considered healthy. The probability of the cancer’s return is low.
It is used the cancer survival rate in the international practice, but in Ukraine we have the rate of mortality. So we are changing the perception from negative to positive. The cancer is curable!
02To inform the general public about the need of early disease detection. It is an important moment in the struggle to improve survival and increase lifetime in cancer.
The official statistics says that in Ukraine 160 thousand people develop cancer every year. We have a survival rate 40%, whereas in the developed countries this factor is 90%.One of the main reasons for this catastrophic survival is low level of early detection due to the fact that Ukrainians are turning to the doctors at a late stage (III-IV).
The guarantee of success in the treatment of patients and increase the duration of their lives is the level’s rise of the timely diagnosis of the malignant neoplasm. According to an analytical study to determine the structure of patients, who have not received special treatment during the year since the establishment of cancer diagnosis, the stages in section of regions in Ukraine is established that during the first year among 61 447 ill in 2007 did not receive special treatment 30 268 patients, and 30, 2% had disease in stage I-II, 23, 6% - in stage III and 26% - in stage IV.
03To defend the rights of patients.
Untimely examination along with a formal approach to monitoring standard of patients life preclude the timely detection of any disease, but especially fraught in case of malignant neoplasms. This neglect leads to a reduction in treating chances of recovery and significantly reduces the duration of his life. All this is a direct violation of the rights of patients to receive timely, effective and adequate medical care, which in turn, to complete cure or prolonged remission.
04To unite the people recovered from the cancer to provide the moral support to the sick and their inspiration.
Dispose to the active social position the people, who overcame the disease. These daredevils had not accepted the inevitability.
05To have an influence on the medical institutions to ensure the reliability of the National Cancer Registry.
The National Cancer Registry and its dataflow are not fully used, most of all it is used to receive the annual report, the definition of rating index and a little bit for the systematic analysis of the fight against the cancer. Like 50 years ago, the quality of cancer care is trying to assess the volume of the beds number, the level of morphological confirmation of the diagnoses, number of surgical interventions, etc. It is necessary to start the improving the organization of dispensary observation of patients, then the survival rate can be a reliable criterion for assessing the state of the organization of the cancer care facilities to the population.
In 2008 Cancer Institute of Ukraine was completed a study to determine the level of coverage dispensary examinations of cancer patients. In most regions of Ukraine the state of the medical examination of cancer patients leaves much to be desired. The standard of life for nearly 50% of cancer patients is unknown to the cancer care facility. It gives rise to doubt about the reliability of the calculated value under these conditions of the survival rates and mortality.
06To support research aimed at finding new drugs for cancer, including preventive vaccine or other biological therapy, which does not destroy the immune system.
